WGC-HSBC Champions day one - What they said

Brooks Koepka led by one shot after getting to eight under on day one of the WGC-HSBC Champions.

Here, we take a look at what some of the chasing pack had to say after their opening rounds.

Haydn Porteous (66, -6)

"I wasn't in until a week, two weeks ago, and when I came out here the plan was to expect nothing and take everything. Just go out there and free it up and a few putts went in. Found a really good golf swing for the week and hopefully I can carry on with the same sort of form. I made a few really good putts out there, especially the knee-wobblers from five foot and in, which was pretty solid. Kept the momentum going with some good par saves and made the birdies that I needed to make, especially on the par fives. It's a great week to be here and hopefully I can carry on the next three rounds."

Patrick Reed (66, -6)

"Any time you go out and shoot in the 60s in your first round at an event it's always good, gets you off to the right start. It's key around here. You can't win golf tournaments on the first day but you definitely can shoot yourself out of them. To go out and shoot a low number like that, set yourself up to go out and play a good three rounds and hopefully have a chance at the end. I was hitting some quality iron shots. I only chipped once today even though I missed a couple of greens, I missed probably three or four greens by inches. So I still had putter in my hand. That's key around here. If you can have the flat stick in your hand all day and not have to chip you're going to have a pretty clean card."

Justin Rose (67, -5)

"I'm happy, it's a good start. I played really, really well today. I drove the ball exceptionally well which is obviously what I need to do around here. I gave myself a ton of chances, I had loads of putts that just slipped by the edge. First round back after a month or so, so to get under par and a solid start, very, very happy. Hopefully we can build on it now for the rest of the week."

Ashun Wu (67, -5)

"I felt I had a pretty good day. Everything was smooth and I had no bogeys. I felt my card is very clean today to finish at five under and it has been a great day for me. I believe that all of the China golfers participating this week, they are well prepared. Being a China golfer, we definitely want to win this WGC-HSBC Champions here in China. China is my home. I feel very, very comfortable when I come back and many friends come to watch and fans are here. So very happy and very relaxed here."

Paul Dunne (67, -5)

"I felt a bit funny going out, I've been struggling with a lack of sleep since I got here, I felt a bit tired. Once I got into the round I started to feel a little bit better. Played pretty nicely, hit the ball well, putted nice. I left a few out there, it was a disappointing finish three-putting 17 and then not birdieing the last but all-in-all I would have taken it at the start of the day. I think I just did everything okay. More of the same, I'll take three more five-unders."
