WGC - Dell Technologies Match Play: Scenarios

Just one day of group play remains at this week’s WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play with a multitude of possibilities still on the table at Austin Country Club.

Sergio Garcia and Jon Rahm

Here, europeantour.com reviews the various scenarios in each of the groups and what everyone needs to do to progress into the weekend knockout.

In bracket order…

Group 11

It's an all-British encounter of Danny Willett vs Russell Knox with varying issues on the line. For the Masters Champ, who is 0-2 from the first two days and already out of the running for the weekend, it's a matter of pride and more competitive practice for his Augusta defence, while for the Scot, who beat Bill Haas on Wednesday but lost out to KT Kim yesterday, only a win will be good enough and he'll have to hope that Haas can beat Kim in the second match out to force a three-man sudden-death play-off.

Matt Fitzpatrick at Austin Country Club

Group 6

Matt Fitzpatrick takes on Justin Thomas with both men at one point apiece thus far. Kevin Na is in control in their pool after two wins in two days so Thomas and Fitz will be hoping the already-knocked out Chris Wood can do them a favour by beating in-form Na to force a potential play-off. A half between Fitzpatrick and Thomas will see Na advance regardless.

Group 14

Phil Mickelson is a perfect 2-0 in this group so the real question now is whether Daniel Berger (1-1) can take down Si Woo Kim (0-0-1) to take his tally to two points, while he'll have to hope JB Holmes can arrest Lefty's run. All Phil needs is a half and his weekend berth is guaranteed.

Group 3

After Jason Day's withdrawal on Wednesday, Marc Leishman will go to two points and have the day off today, while Lee Westwood (1-1) needs to defeat Pat Perez (2-0) and then take down the Aussie and American in a three-man play-off.

Group 10

Tyrrell Hatton (2-0) has been sublime over the first two days in Austin and will win the group with a half against Rafa Cabrera Bello today. The Spaniard (1-1) will need to beat the Englishman while Charles Howell III (1-1) needs Rafa to do him that favour and beat the pointless Jeunghun Wang to, again, force a three-man play-off later today.

Charl Schwartzel during the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play

Group 7

In one of the matches of the day, Sergio Garcia (1-0-1) will take on compatriot Jon Rahm (2-0) as the Spaniards duke it out for a spot in the last 16. Rahm just needs a draw to progress while Garcia needs the full point. Kevin Chappell (0-2) and Shane Lowry (0-1-1) will play a dead rubber match with neither able to progress.

Group 15

William McGirt (2-0) is in pole position in this pool and needs just a half against Andy Sullivan (0-2) to win the group. Only a win will do for either men in the Branden Grace vs Brandt Snedeker clash and they'll have to hope that Sully can do them a favour to force what would be a two-man play-off.

Group 2

All done and dusted here. Soren Kjeldsen (2-0) took down Rory McIlroy and then Emiliano Grillo while Gary Woodland's withdrawal means the Dane has the day off, a full three points and the Argentinian and the World Number Two will have a rubber match.

Group 12

In the only match up of the day featuring two players with a 100 per cent record, Paul Casey and Charl Schwartzel play for all the marbles. A halved match will just equal extra sudden-death holes for those two, while Dutchman Joost Luiten (0-2) and Byeong Hun An (0-2) fight for pride (and a bit of extra cash).

Ross Fisher

Group 5

54th seed Hideto Tanihara is in control in this pool (1-0-1) but a four-man play-off is still a possibility. Should his compatriot Yuta Ikeda (0-1-1) prevail in the all-Japanese clash and should Spieth and Ryan Moore (1-1) halve their match, the whole quartet will go to extra holes to decide things. So many scenarios here...

Group 13

Simple maths for the man who starred in his rookie appearance at last year's Ryder Cup, as Thomas Pieters (1-1) needs to beat undefeated American Bubba Watson (2-0) to force a play-off. Scott Piercy (0-2) is out but Venezuela's Jhonattan Vegas needs the 'W' and the above result to unfold for a three-man shoot-out.

Group 4

Louis Oosthuizen (1-1) hadn't lost a group stage match since the change in format in 2015 before Ryder Cup skipper Jim Furyk (1-0-1) took him down on Thursday. Hideki Matsuyama (0-1-1) is out even if he beats the South African, while Ross Fisher (1-1) can also top the group with a victory over the veteran American. Many scenarios...

Group 9

Brooks Koepka (2-0) has only played 26 holes so far this week (fewer than any other player - bar the WDs), losing just one hole in the process. A half against compatriot Patrick Reed (0-1-1) will be enough to progress for Brooks while Kevin Kisner (1-1) needs to beat Jason Dufner (0-1-1) and hope Reed can beat Koepka to force a play-off.

Martin Kaymer during the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play

Group 8

This group, again, is finished. After winning his first two matches, Alex Noren sits out today following the withdrawal of Francesco Molinari yesterday, meaning the Swede takes maximum points while Bernd Wiesberger and Thongchai Jaidee will compete in another dead rubber.

Group 16

Race to Dubai leader Tommy Fleetwood (1-1) needs a few things to go his way to progress. The Englishman will need to beat Matt Kuchar (0-1-1) and hope that the Brendan Steele (1-0-1) and Zach Johnson (1-1) match results in either a win for Zach or a half (but not a win for Brendan) to get into a two or three-man play-off for top spot.

Group 1

Three men still have a shot at progressing from this pool but World Number One Dustin Johnson (2-0) can win it with just a half against compatriot Jimmy Walker (1-1). If Martin Kaymer (1-1) can beat the pointless Webb Simpson (0-2) and Walker can take down Johnson, there'll be a three-man play-off.
