Lee Westwood showed no signs of the health problems that hampered his opening round at Loch Lomond as he charged into contention at The Barclays Scottish Open.
The World Number 18 from England birdied eight of his first 11 holes with only one bogey to charge into second place on ten under for the week during the early stages of the third round.
It was all a far cry from Thursday’s opening round, when Westwood questioned his decision to play when he was clearly under the weather, with the Open de France ALSTOM runner-up struggling to a two over par 73.
The Worksop golfer was given antibiotics by a doctor and after 15 hours sleep returned to make the cut with a second round 66.
And by reaching seven under for the day through his first 11 holes, Westwood had put himself firmly in contention for his first European Tour win for almost two years.
Only overnight leader Retief Goosen was ahead of Westwood on the leaderboard, the South African yet to tee off his third round after a sublime 63 took him to 11 under at the halfway stage.
American Brian Gay was another to make good progress, five birdies taking him to the turn in 31 and eight under for the week – one behind third placed Adam Scott and level with Martin Kaymer and Marcus Fraser, all of whom were still to tee off.
