Westwood makes most of Malaysia experience

Lee Westwood once again made himself at home in Malaysia as he fired a stunning 62 on day two of the Maybank Championship.

The Englishman is a two-time winner of the Malaysian Open, with his first win in 1997 coming here at Saujana Golf & Country Club.

His second was his latest European Tour win in 2014 but after carding 11 birdies and a single bogey on Friday, the 44 year old is in contention for victory number 24 over the weekend.

"It was enjoyable, there were a lot of birdies going in out there," he said.

"It’s nice to be in contention and to know this golf course well. I won the Malaysian Open here 21 years ago. I was touring pro for this course, so I’ve probably played it more than most and I know where to hit it.

"I hit it close a lot and a pretty pain-free round. Gave myself a lot of birdie chances, so it was a really good ball-striking round and I holed out well as well. I was pleased with the way today went and hopefully we can build on that more.

"I played alright the first three weeks of the year, I missed the first two cuts but I sort of got in my own way mentally, not sure the reason for that but today I just freewheeled really and had fun out there."

Scot Marc Warren was also ten under after a 66 and he was happy with his effort after completing his first round in the morning following Thursday's storm delay.

"It was good," he said. "Came back this morning to finish yesterday’s round, still had three holes to play, and only one bogey for the first two rounds, so very pleasing.

"I’m really pleased overall. On this golf course if you only have one bogey your game is going to be pretty solid and I feel every aspect is pretty good, so looking forward to the weekend."

Chris Paisley was another player a shot off the lead after a tenth consecutive sub-70 round and he was pleased to grind his way to a 69 with two birdies in his last three holes.

"I was really happy with it," he said. "It was a bit scrappy compared to yesterday and I didn’t have my best game but stayed patient and managed to shoot three under and keep the run going."
