Westwood happy to have a chance

Lee Westwood will be looking to draw on all of his experience as he heads into the final round of the US Open with another chance to win a Major Championship.

The Englishman has nine top threes in golf's four biggest events since 2008, more than any other player, with two of those coming in the US Open.

He is playing in his 73rd Major this week but has yet to add that particular glory to a CV which contains 23 European Tour wins and seven winning appearances on the European Ryder Cup Team.

The 43 year old finished in a tie for second at the Masters Tournament last month and as he heads into round four at Oakmont Country Club five shots behind Shane Lowry, he has seen it all before.

"I've been in contention a lot in Major Championships so it's helped me a lot," he said.

It's just nice to be in contention in a Major Championship again, where everyone wants to be. It's a fantastic atmosphere - Lee Westwood

"To be under par going into the final round, it's a good position to be in. I have a chance to win."

Westwood has recorded rounds of 67-72-69 this week to sit at two under, a total which many predicted would be good enough to win the tournament over the notoriously tough layout in Pennsylvania.

Heavy rains on Thursday softened the course up to make scoring slightly easier but with rising temperatures ever since, it is expected to play the toughest it has all week on Sunday afternoon.

"It was obviously softer after all the rain the first couple of days, but not having plenty of water on it, it's just going to firm up," said Westwood. "The greens will get faster, and the pins will be tough this afternoon no doubt, because they generally like around par winning.

"So we'll have to see what they throw up."
