Westwood happy to be back on home soil

Lee Westwood aims to atone for the mistake that cost him the BMW PGA Championship and World Number One spot when he returns to Wentworth Club this week.

After missing crucial putts at the 16th and 18th in regulation play 12 months ago, the Englishman found himself in a play-off with compatriot Luke Donald for The European Tour’s flagship title.

But the 39 year old spun his approach at the par five final hole into the water to hand Donald the title and with it the top spot in the Official World Golf Ranking.

“It shouldn't have gone to a play-off last year really,” said Westwood.

“If I'm being critical of myself - three-putting 16, and I didn't birdie 17 going in with a three iron, and then I had a five footer on the last for birdie that I missed. So I had my chances - it was my own fault.

“But hopefully I can go one better. It's always nice to come back to Wentworth. It looks like a great week's weather, and it makes it an even more special week if people are walking around in warm sunshine and it has a summery feel to it, this tournament.

“It's a week that I think everybody who plays on The European Tour looks forward to.”

Westwood won his first title of the year in Indonesia last month and, having finished in a tie for third place at the Masters Tournament, he feels he is close to his best form as the season reaches a crucial period.

“I've played okay this year,” he added. “I won in Indonesia and finished in the top five four times on the US PGA Tour, came third in the Masters, and got further than I've ever gotten in the Accenture Match Play. So it's been a decent start to the year, and hopefully it can get even better this week.”
