Westwood eyes victory in Cologne

Lee Westwood returns to the scene of one of his greatest rounds this week - intent on finishing the job this time.

Omega European Masters - Round One

Two years ago Westwood began the Mercedes-Benz Championship in Cologne with an 11 under par 61, equalling the lowest score of his career.

It gave him a four stroke lead, but he failed to break 70 the rest of the week and finished up joint sixth, six shots behind winner Søren Hansen.

A week later the former European Number One made amends by capturing the British Masters at The Belfry - his 29th professional success - yet he has not won a tournament since and has seen a number of titles slip from of his grasp.

Despite that, Westwood is tenth in the World Rankings and the second highest-ranked player in this week's elite 78-man field behind Ryder Cup teammate Henrik Stenson. They are paired together in the opening round.

Unable to play in the event last year because of tonsilitis, the 36 year old from Worksop said: "To be part of a tournament like this with no halfway cut is a little reward for having a good year."

His return from a two-week lay-off brought a 23rd place finish in last week's Omega European Masters in Switzerland, but he now looks to build on a closing 66 there.

"Mentally I was a bit stale all week, but hopefully I've got the rust out of the system," added Westwood, who hardly touched his clubs during a family holiday in Portugal.

A first prize of €320,000 would not be quite enough to take him above Martin Kaymer and Paul Casey at the top of The Race to Dubai.

But a fourth place finish would take him into third spot ahead of 20 year old Rory McIlroy, who has opted to play in Korea this week.

England's Ross Fisher can go third on The Race to Dubai standings as well, but only with a victory.

Fisher became a father for the first time a week after challenging for The Open Championship at Turnberry in July and is back now from a three-week break.
