Paul Waring hits the opening tee shot of the 2011 BMW PGA Championship

England’s Paul Waring struck the opening tee shot after being announced into the tee by the dulcet tones of Official Starter Ivor Robson, and the Tour’s flagship event began.

Kenneth Ferrie was the first player to register a birdie when he made a two on the second in the second group out but the course is playing tough and there is more blue on the leaderboard among the early starters.

According to the official weather forecast there is a chance of thunderstorms later as the cold front moves through this afternoon. Clouds were rolling in from the west across southern England along with gusty SW winds. Scattered showers will begin to develop by mid morning and continue on and off through late afternoon. Winds today will be gusting 35 to 40 mph especially this afternoon.

After the remodelling of the course ahead of last year’s tournament, the eighth and 18th greens have been subsequently been rebuilt.
