Wang keeps his nose in front

Jeunghun Wang took a two-shot lead into the back nine during the final round of the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters as the wind finally made its arrival at Doha Golf Club.

The South Korean began the day with a three-shot lead and while playing partner Jaco Van Zyl cut that to one after a blistering start, a bogey from the South African on the sixth re-established a cushion.

Wang went out in 34 to get to 17 under, two shots clear of Van Zyl, Frenchman Mike Lorenzo-Vera and Swede Joakim Lagergren who had moved through the field.

The trademark high winds had stayed away most of the week in the desert but they began to pick up as the leaders made the turn, with a dramatic closing stretch in store.

Wang and Van Zyl both made birdies after laying up on the first, with Wang making a bit of a mess of his second but remedying that with an exquisite approach.

A 15-foot right-to-lefter handed Wang another gain on the second and when Van Zyl followed the 21 year old in from ten feet, the duo were threatening to break away from the rest of the field.

Van Zyl then made it three out of three after an excellent tee-shot into the third and while Wang was closer, he could not make the putt.

A double-breaker from the fringe on the fifth got Van Zyl within one as Wang made a smart par save but a three-putt bogey from out of nowhere on the next re-established the two-shot cushion.

Lorenzo-Vera had birdies on the first, third, sixth and seventh to turn in 32 and when he added two more on the 11th and 12th, he was up into a share of second.

Lagergren had a birdie on the fifth but his round came to life around the turn as he rattled off four gains in a row from the eighth.

Last season's Challenge Tour number one Jordan Smith was then at 14 under after picking up six birdies in his first 14 holes, the highlight being a stunning chip-and-run on the 12th.

Thomas Aiken was also 14 under after turning in 33 with a hat-trick of birdies from the third.

Lucas Bjerregaard was then in the clubhouse at 12 under after a 66 alongside Kiradech Aphibarnrat, Rafa Cabrera Bello and Chris Wood.
