Matt Wallace has been voted Hilton Golfer of the Month for September after winning his third European Tour title of the season at the Made in Denmark.
The Englishman received 49 per cent of the public vote ahead of Omega European Masters winner Matthew Fitzpatrick, who collected 25 per cent of the vote to claim second place.
After making birdie on five of his last six holes in regulation at Silkeborg Ry Golf Club, Wallace also made gains at both of the extra holes in sudden-death to emerge victorious from a four-man play-off with countrymen Steven Brown, Jonathan Thomson and Lee Westwood.
It was the 28 year old’s third title of 2018, his fourth in the last two years, and put him on the verge of a place in in Thomas Bjørn’s European Ryder Cup team.
Although he missed out on this occasion, Wallace is becoming a proven winner at all levels of the game – in the past two years he has won ten titles between the third tier Alps Tour and the European Tour.
Fitzpatrick, who finished second in the competition, beat Lucas Bjerregaard in a play-off to become the first man since Seve Ballesteros, 40 years earlier, to defend the Omega European Masters. With victory in the Swiss Alps, he also became the youngest Englishman to achieve five European Tour wins at 24 years and eight days old, with it surpassing Sir Nick Faldo’s long standing record.
Tom Lewis came third with 21 per cent of the public vote after claiming his first title since the 2011 at the Bridgestone Challenge on the European Challenge Tour, while one week later he returned to Vilamoura to repeat his heroics of seven years earlier.
Wu Ashun finished fourth in last month’s competition after winning his third title at the KLM Open to become the most successful Chinese golfer in European Tour history.
