Venues named for 2015 Senior Open Qualifying

Three courses – the Berkshire Golf Club, Camberley Heath Golf Club and Foxhills – have been announced as host venues for the Monday Qualifying event prior to The 2015 Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex, which takes place at Sunningdale Golf Club from July 23-26.

Senior Open trophy

This year’s qualifying event proved extremely popular, attracting nearly 400 players, with a similar number expected next year as the Senior Open heads back to Sunningdale for the first time since 2009.

They will be vying for approximately 30 spots in the field for The Senior Open Championship and the chance to play alongside some of the game’s great names, such as Miguel Angel Jiménez, Colin Montgomerie and defending champion Bernhard Langer, who claimed his second Senior Open crown by a record-breaking 13 strokes at Royal Porthcawl last month.

The Berkshire Golf Club, designed by Herbert Fowler in 1928, previously hosted the English Amateur Championship and was one of the qualifying venues for The Senior Open Championship in 2009. It also hosts the annual Berkshire Trophy, one of the UK’s major amateur competitions, which boasts a roll of honour including Sir Nick Faldo, Sandy Lyle and Ross Fisher.

Camberley Heath Golf Club is a Harry Colt classic, set in 135 acres of Surrey heathland which celebrated its Centenary Year in 2013. It previously hosted Regional Qualifying for The Open Championship and was also one of the qualifying venues for The Senior Open five years ago.

Meanwhile, Foxhills will host qualifying for the first time, on the Bernard Hunt Course named after the former Ryder Cup player and captain, Bernard Hunt MBE. It previously hosted the Players’ Championship of Europe on two occasions, as well three editions of The European Tour Qualifying School, notably in 1977 when future Major Champion Lyle was the winner.

Johnnie Cole-Hamilton, Executive Director – Championships, at The R&A, said on behalf of the Championship: “Local Monday qualifying has become an integral part of The Senior Open Championship and attracts an increasingly large number of entrants. We are delighted to have three more superb courses in the Berkshire, Camberley Heath and Foxhills as host venues for 2015.

“All three will play a crucial role in next year’s Championship and we look forward to working with them ahead of Sunningdale hosting The Senior Open Championship for the second time.”
