Van Zyl maintains momentum to extend Turkey lead

Jaco Van Zyl continued his incredible form at the Turkish Airlines Open as he extended his lead to six shots midway through the second round at The Montgomerie Maxx Royal.

The South African fired a 61 in the first round and followed it by turning in 33 on Friday to give himself a sizeable cushion over Chris Wood.

Van Zyl has yet to win on The European Tour but has four top tens this year including a third-placed finish at the Alstom Open de France.

The leader flew out of the blocks with a birdie on the 11th and when he followed it with another on the 13th, he was eight under in seven par fives played so far this week.

Another birdie followed on the 15th and Van Zyl was just millimetres from claiming another from eight feet on the 16th before he got one to drop on the 17th.

He failed to take advantage of a par five for the first time on the 18th but had already established a firm early grip on the tournament at 15 under.

Wood opened with a birdie but gave the shot back before gains on the third, fourth and sixth got him into second place on his own.

Lee Westwood had bemoaned the fact he did not make the most of the par fives in his first round but he birdied the fourth for the second day in a row to get to nine under.

He then found the water on the par three eighth to drop his first shot of the week and go back to eight under.

Alexander Levy was flying through 12 holes and he picked up birdies on the fourth, sixth, eighth, tenth and 11th to get to eight under alongside Westwood and Kiradech Aphibarnrat.

The Thai had an eventful morning, making an eagle, three birdies and two bogeys in his opening 11 holes.

Race to Dubai leader Rory McIlroy was then in the group at seven under with birdies at the first and the fourth - where he had a slice of luck after seeing his ball hit a tree to avoid going in the water.

Lee Slattery and Rafael Cabrera-Bello were also seven under with Graeme McDowell a shot behind having made four birdies in his opening nine holes.

Danny Willett and Shane Lowry were then in the group at five under.

Thomas Pieters was two under for the day and the tournament but that did not tell the story of his round after he opened birdie-birdie-birdie-eagle and then made a triple bogey on the tenth.
