Van Zyl, who opened the tournament with a 72, picked up shots on the second, sixth and seventh to turn in 33.

A bogey at the tenth halted the South African’s progress, but he then returned to two under - and a share of fourth place - with another birdie at the par five 11th.

Overnight leader Lee Slattery, four under after day one, had yet to begin his second round, while Dutchman Tim Sluiter recovered from a bogey at the first by birdieing the fourth to get back alongside Marcel Siem on three under.

England’s Tom Lewis, who started at the 11th, also made good progress today with three birdies, moving him up to level par.

He was joined on that mark by countrymen Robert Coles and David Lynn, who were both two under for their second rounds.

Frenchman Raphaël Jacquelin was launching a superb fightback, having gone round in 76 yesterday.

Another man to begin on the back nine, Jacquelin birdied the 11th, 13th, 15th and 16th to get to four under for the day and a one over aggregate.

He then made further ground on the 12th and appeared on course for the lowest score of the week so far.
