UBS Hong Kong Open day one - What they said

An opening round of 65 handed SSP Chawrasia the first-round lead at five under after day one of the UBS Hong Kong Open.

Matthew Fitzpatrick

Here, we take a look at what some of the chasing pack had to say after their opening rounds.

Matthew Fitzpatrick (66, -4)

"It's a good start to the week, it's not an easy course around here. Listening to Justin Rose talking after the Pro-Am, he said four under would be a good score. I'll definitely take that right now and see where you end up. Good start, hopefully three more. I hit it great tee-to-green. I think I had seven or eight chances inside 15 feet and on a day like today when it's so windy and such a tough golf course, with how tight it is, it was a good day. I've been playing nicely. Just trying to keep it ticking over this week and finish on a high for the year and then have some time off."

Tommy Fleetwood (68, -2)

"A really tough, difficult morning of golf. The wind was up. I think the course is brilliant. Once you start getting out of position out there it makes it so difficult. I hit it pretty well, put myself in position a lot and gave myself a few chances, felt like I was ticking along nicely. Two under start, I'm very happy. Played lovely. Putting felt really good out there, read the greens well. I had a couple that really did burn the edge, would have been nice for them to drop. I've got three days for them to drop."

Justin Rose (68, -2)

"It was an interesting round. I hit five birdies today, all of them were from like two feet, I stuffed it in there five times and didn't really make putts of any distance. A shame to miss one at the last, I think I tried to play left centre and it seemed to go a little left on me and I had too much speed and spun out. All in all a steady start, though. It was quite tricky out there. Predicting numbers, I don't really know what the weather is going to do but I feel like just keep moving forward and there should be a chance on Sunday."

Sam Brazel (69, -1)

"I'm happy with the finish. It was tricky out there, the wind was up early and a bit blustery too, it was pretty strong in places. Happy with the result. A little bit rattled early or midway through the round but stuck in there and really enjoying the week being defending champion for the first time. It's been a bit of a buzz. The course is great so I think it would be nice to play the next three days."

Rafa Cabrera Bello (69, -1)

"It was tough today. It was windy and it was a bit cold this morning. Very gusty and with a slight change of direction so it was indeed playing tricky. Under par I think is a good score. The first ten, 11, 12 holes, I thought I played really good, made very few mistakes and gave myself a few chances, that's when I managed to score. The last few holes I didn't quite continue that level of golf, made a few mistakes."
