Favourite – Scottie Scheffler
With four wins already this year and leading the way in both birdies and eagles on the PGA TOUR this season Jon Rahm was very high up on our radar, but ultimately Scottie Scheffler edges him out as favourite. Since returning to the top of the world rankings with a tie for second at last month’s U.S. PGA Championship, the American has finished in a tie for third and solo third in his subsequent two starts ahead of the penultimate Major of the season. He has been a consistent presence at the top of leaderboards, not missing a cut since last August while he has only missed the weekend’s action at a Major once since the 2020 Masters Tournament. The 26-year-old finished in a tie for second alongside Will Zalatoris as Fitzpatrick won his maiden Major 12 months ago and comes into the week rested after skipping the RBC Canadian Open. With many predicting tee to green play will pivotal this week, Scheffler leads the way on the PGA TOUR for strokes gained stats off the tee, approach to green and tee-to-green.
Form horse – Viktor Hovland
The Norwegian’s moment on golf’s biggest stage is coming. The 25-year-old has finished no worse than a tie for seventh in his last three Major starts. Since narrowly missing out on lifting the Wanamaker Trophy last month, Viktor Hovland has won the Memorial Tournament, defeating Denny McCarthy in a play-off at Muirfield Village Golf Club to win his fourth PGA TOUR title. He is ranked a career-high fifth in the world, fourth in the FedExCup standings and sixth for Scoring Average, highlighting his status as one of the world’s elite players. With the Majors following almost one after the other, he will be hoping he can capitalise on his form and lift the trophy. Having become the first Norwegian to win a DP World Tour title at the BMW International Open in 2021, can he now make further history as the first player from his country to win one of the sport’s four most coveted titles?
Wild card – Min Woo Lee
The Australian earned his spot at the 123rd U.S. Open by finishing as the highest ranked player on the current Race to Dubai Rankings in Partnership with Rolex who is not otherwise exempt. A two-time winner on Tour, Min Woo Lee built on a brilliant finish to last season as he registered three top five finishes in his first three starts to the 2023 campaign, including a tie for second at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, the opening Rolex Series event of the year. He has since finished in a share of sixth at The PLAYERS Championship on the PGA TOUR in March and tied for 18th at the US PGA Championship last month. Coupled with some strong Major results last season (T14 in the Masters, T27 in the U.S. Open and T21 in The Open), the 24-year-old clearly relishes the big stage and he will be eager to put himself into the mix come late on Sunday. Ranked first for stroke average on the DP World Tour so far this season, the World Number 66 is certainly one to keep an eye on.
Looking back - Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed
The Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed was a week for the underdog with four of the top six highest scorers being picked by under 3 per cent of Fantasy players. Dale Whitnell was picked by just two per cent of players and Captained by only 0.02 per cent (just four players in total), with his 27-birdie performance across the four days seeing him wrack up 223 points. Alex Noren was the most picked player, being selected by 37 per cent of teams. The Swede paid this off by finishing in a tie for twelfth place, scoring 154 points. Alexander Björk - our Favourite - registered a top ten to please the 30 per cent of players who opted for him in their team but there was disappointment for those who selected Ewen Ferguson as the Form Horse missed out on the weekend's action.
