Welcome to Tour Tips, a series dedicated to helping amateurs play better golf through the insight of a DP World Tour player.
In this episode, we tackle the 60 to 70 yard bunker shot with Tom McKibbin.
Fresh off his Major Championship debut at the 2024 U.S. Open, the Northern Irishman was back playing at the KLM Open and giving tips on what is viewed by many as the toughest shot in the game.
McKibbin, who won on the DP World Tour in his rookie season last year, opts for a nine iron - perhaps more club than many amateurs may imagine - for such a shot.
His two main pieces are advice are to open the club face and attack the ball hard, while maintaining the speed through the shot.
"It is hard because if you don't have a good lie and you hit the ball first it goes very far, while if you just slightly mishit it it goes absolutely nowhere," he said.
"If you don't get a good lie then it is a bit of luck really. You have just got to be so precise."
