Tour Tips: Playing out of the rough around the greens

Welcome to Tour Tips, a series dedicated to helping amateurs play better golf through the insight of a DP World Tour player.

In this episode, we analyse the key facets that will help you improve your play from out of the rough around the greens with the help of Jeff Winther.

From flop shots to bump and runs, the charismatic Dane breaks down the decision making he adopts when he finds himself in the long grass around the putting surface.

The DP World Tour winner also explains club selection, his set up and how that influences the way the ball releases.

When in the really long rough, with the ball nestled down, and around ten yards to the green, visualisation is paramount.

"You want to pick a club with a lot of loft but you still need to maintain an open face because the high rough will have a strong chance to wrap around the hosel of the shaft and then shut the face of the club, he says.

"Ideally you want an open face, a strong left hand to keep the face open through impact and then you have got to pick a place. Obviously it takes a bit of practice but you pick a place to land the ball to release it out to the pin."
