Brendon Todd was still the man to catch in the early stages of Sunday's final round at the WGC-FedEx St Jude Invitational.
Some big moves were being made behind overnight leader Todd before the final pairing had even started their rounds, with the chasing pack making the most of favourable scoring conditions on day four, but the 35-year-old American was still in front by the time he arrived at the first tee.
Todd gave himself a good chance to increase his lead on the first green but left his 19 foot birdie putt just short.
After another good approach into the second, Todd missed his birdie effort again - this time from 12 feet - to remain at 12 under par.
Fowler took full advantage of Todd's failure to take his chances, making birdies at the second and third to join him at the summit.
But after missing his par putt at the fourth, Fowler slipped back into a tie for second alongside Byeong Hun An, who carded one birdie and one bogey in his first three holes.
Todd was unable to convert another birdie opportunity at the third but he tapped in for par to keep his card clean and remain one shot clear.
Englishman Tom Lewis, who equalled the course record at TPC Southwind with a superb 61 on Saturday, was on the charge again, firing four birdies in a row from the third to jump to ten under par.
Defending champion Brooks Koepka and his fellow American Justin Thomas were also on ten under after making solid starts.
Early clubhouse leader Ryan Palmer showed those at the top of the leaderboard what was possible on Sunday as he made six birdies in a flawless 64 to finish the tournament on seven under.
