Tinning takes early advantage at Seniors PGA

Steen Tinning took no time to re-familiarise himself with the top of a European Senior Tour leaderboard as the Dane stormed into the lead at the PGA Seniors Championship at Stoke by Nayland.

The first full Senior Tour event of 2014, the PGA Seniors Championship saw last season’s Rookie of the Year Tinning card an opening four under par 67 to lead by one from Peter Fowler and Chris Williams at the midway point of round one.

A dream start saw Tinning collect four birdies in his opening five holes before he consolidated his fine start with 13 consecutive pars to establish a one stroke lead.

“I played really well at the start of the round today but then conditions got a little tougher and it was more difficult as the round progressed,” said Tinning.

Tinning joined 34 other European Senior Tour Members at the recent US Senior PGA Championship where he witnessed one of his own – Colin Montgomerie – claim a maiden Senior Major.

The 51 year old Dane performed well at Harbor Shores to finish in a tie for 33rdplace and give himself a nice confidence boost ahead of Europe’s summer of golf.

“I really enjoyed it out in America and played well so I was pleased with the game at Harbor Shores,” he continued.

“It feels good to be back on the Senior Tour and it’s great that the season is getting into full swing now because I am the type of player who needs to be playing a lot of tournaments to stay sharp. I have managed to do that over the past few months so hopefully I can have another good year on the Senior Tour.”
