Tight at the top in Fiji

A trio of Australians surged into the early lead as the Fiji International got under way at Natadola Bay Golf Course on Thursday.

The European Tour was making its first trip to the island paradise for the third edition of the event which is co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour of Australasia.

Clayton Bridges, Jason Norris and Todd Sinnott set the early pace at three under on a packed leaderboard, with 39 players level par or better and within three shots of the lead.

American Boo Weekley was among those just a shot off the early lead, with three-time Major Championship winner and local hero Vijay Singh a further stroke back.

Norris set the early pace as he made a hat-trick of birdies from the third and he remained three under after ten holes, but he was soon joined by Bridges and Sinnott.

Sinnott has made three cuts in four events on the European Tour this season and made birdies on the 11th, 15th and 17th in his first eight holes.

Bridges, meanwhile, is making his European Tour debut and he got off to a flying start in his first six holes, birdieing the 11th, 12th and 15th.

Weekley spoke before the tournament of how much he was enjoying his time in Fiji and he certainly looked to be making himself at home as he turned in 34 with birdies on the 12th and 15th.

Fellow Americans Ryan Carter and Heath Slocum were also at two under alongside South Korea's Byung-jun Kim and a large group of Australians made up of Rory Bourke, Mitchell Brown, Steve Dartnall, Ryan Haller, Stephen Leaney, Callan O'Reilly, Michael Sim and Christopher Wood.
