The MCB Tour Championship – Seychelles returns for a second successive season and we have picked out three players who could be in a battle for top spot on Saturday afternoon at Constance Lemuria.
Phillip Price
The Welshman nearly sealed the inaugural title last year but was beaten in the play-off on the first extra hole by Roger Chapman, as he rolled in a 30 foot eagle putt to win. However, the play-off loss has spurred Price on and 2019 has been a season to remember, which has seen him top the Staysure Tour Order of Merit after ten top tens plus victory at the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship.
With The 2002 Ryder Cup hero leading the Order of Merit and aiming to win his first John Jacobs Trophy, a victory this week could wrap up the season-long title, while a strong performance would put pressure on the chasing pack in the rankings.
Peter Baker
Baker clinched his first win on the over 50s circuit at the Senior Open Hauts de France by Jean van de Velde in June and has impressed during his second full season on the Staysure Tour.
The former Ryder Cup player has recorded seven top tens, including runner-up finishes at the Swiss Seniors Open and Scottish Senior Open and currently sits eighth on the Order of Merit. At last year’s MCB Tour Championship – Seychelles, the three-time European Tour winner finished his final round with three consecutive birdies. If he can find his line and length once again, Baker could add another top ten to his collection this season.
Barry Lane
Lane won the maiden MCB Tour Championship – Madagascar last week to claim his eighth Staysure Tour title and moved from 11th place to third in the Order of Merit. The victory, which was his second of 2019 after he clinched the Senior Italian Open in June, has given him the platform to push for a career first to end the season as Staysure Tour Number One.
The calm and patient manner in which he sealed the win in Madagascar will be needed in Seychelles with a calm first 12 holes met with a testing final six, however, the Englishman’s experience, which saw him finish tied 11th last year will put him in good stead for a 2019 title challenge.
