The Farmfoods European Senior Masters hosted by Peter Baker, the final event of the Staysure Tour season to be played on European soil, takes place at Forest of Arden Hotel and Country Club this week. Here, we have picked out three players who could be contending for the title in Coventry.
Peter Baker
Where better to start than with the man mentioned in the tournament title? The Englishman made his Staysure Tour debut as tournament host in 2017 and picked up his first win on the over-50s scene earlier this year, at the Senior Open Hauts de France by Jean van de Velde. The three-time European Tour winner has since attained five top ten finishes, including fourth place at the Druh Belts presents Paris Legends Championship by Renault Z.E. last time out. As he returns to a venue he knows well, Baker could certainly be one to watch come Sunday afternoon.
José Coceres
The man of the moment. The Argentine was unable to find a victory in his maiden Staysure Tour season in 2018 – picking up just two top tens in the process – but has established his credentials this year. The two-time European Tour winner secured an emotional first over-50s victory at the Swiss Seniors Open in July before joining David Shacklady as the only other two-time winner this season by winning the Murhof Legends – Austrian Senior Open last week. Coceres won by four shots ahead of Scottish Senior Open champion Paul Lawrie, with the highlight being a stunning ten under par 62 on the second day in Austria. The 56-year-old will this week go in search of becoming the first three-time winner in a single season on the Staysure Tour since Colin Montgomerie in 2015.
Paul Broadhurst
The Englishman tees it up on the Staysure Tour this week for the first time this season, outside of the Senior Majors. Born just 20 miles from Forest of Arden in Walsall, this is undoubtedly a home event for the six-time European Tour winner. Over three Staysure Tour starts in 2019, he has finished in the top three twice – third at the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship and second at The Senior Open Presented by Rolex – in addition to a tie for 11th place at the U.S. Senior Open. For a man without a win on home soil since the 1993 Benson and Hedges International Open, a tournament close to home could be the opportunity Broadhurst needs to secure his sixth Staysure Tour victory.
