European Challenge Tour players remain in Sweden this week for the Dormy Open. The event will be taking place at Österåkers Golfklubb, located close to the Swedish capital of Stockholm, from Wednesday May 19 – Saturday May 22. Here are our Three to Watch…
Marcus Svensson
Marcus Svensson will be playing in just his fourth Challenge Tour event at the Dormy Open. He will be hoping to continue his fine form on home soil which saw him finish in a tie for 23rd place last week at the Range Servant Challenge by Hinton Golf. The 23-year-old started the tournament at a blistering pace, opening with a three under par round of 69 followed by a sensational 66 on day two, before finishing the tournament eight under par.
Svensson has been a special talent from a young age. In 2015 he won the British Boys Amateur Championship held at Royal Birkdale and Southport & Ainsdale, whilst he also finished third in the World Championship. The following year Svensson represented Europe in the Junior Ryder Cup at Hazeltine.
The Swede will be looking to build on his strong start to the season this week at the Dormy Open, played on the course designed by former Challenge Tour Number One, Henrik Stenson, and could be where a new Swedish star is born.
Marcus Helligkilde
Marcus Helligkilde has improved with each tournament so far on the 2021 Road to Mallorca. Solid performances throughout the South African Swing saw him finish tied 51st and tied 34th in the Limpopo Championship and Dimension Data Pro-Am respectively. A solid performance at the Range Servant Challenge saw him shoot under par in all four rounds leading to a second placed finish behind Scotland’s Craig Howie. The strong showing at Hinton Golf Club saw Helligkilde climb 40 places into sixth on the Road to Mallorca Rankings, a position that if maintained would see him gain that all important European Tour card at the end of the season.
The young Dane will be hoping to continue his terrific form and go one better this time in Sweden to pick up his first Challenge Tour trophy.
Ben Jones
It has been quite the month for England’s Ben Jones. From teeing it up at Seminole in the Walker Cup, to making his professional debut on the Challenge Tour last week at the Range Servant Challenge by Hinton Golf. Jones became the first Northamptonshire amateur golfer to play in prestigious Walker Cup a fortnight ago and has now made his maiden steps into the world of professional golf.
Jones is looking to follow in the footsteps of fellow Englishmen such as Matt Wallace and Tyrell Hatton, in breaking through and achieving success on the European Tour from Challenge Tour beginnings. He made a fine start with a tie for 15th place last week in Malmö, which included a scintillating final day 67, catapulting him straight to 69th on the Road to Mallorca Rankings.
