The Price is right for Watson

Fresh from his fruitful exploits at The Open Championship at Royal St George’s, Tom Watson was paired with fellow former Open Champion Nick Price for the opening round of this week’s Senior Open Championship, played at Walton Heath Golf Club, in Surrey.

Watson, the five-time Open Champion, showed flashes of his youth in Sandwich last week before finishing in a tie for 22nd place.

And he is back for more this week on the British soil that has always been a happy hunting ground for the American, chasing a fourth Senior Open Championship title, having emerged victorious in 2003, 2005 and 2007.

Teeing off alongside Watson and Price at 2.20pm on Thursday is former Cleveland Golf / Srixon Scottish Senior Open champion Barry Lane.

Defending champion Bernhard Langer, meanwhile, is out on the course at the much earlier time of 9.30am, joined by American John Cook and European Senior Tour winner Gordon Brand Junior of Scotland.

They are immediately followed by the illustrious three-ball of Tom Kite, Ian Woosnam and Corey Pavin, all former Major champions, while Fred Funk, Sam Torrance and Jeff Sluman will be next on the tee at 10.00am.

Peter Fowler comes into the Senior Open Championship on the back of a victory two weeks ago, when he won the Bad Ragaz PGA Senior Open in Switzerland, and he is in good company for his 2pm tee-off as he is joined by Mark O’Meara and Sandy Lyle.
