The golfing superstars set to descend on Scotland for the Genesis Scottish Open

A host of the world's very best will be heading to The Renaissance Club for the third Rolex Series event of the DP World Tour season.

One of the strongest fields in the history of the Genesis Scottish Open is assembling as DP World Tour and PGA TOUR stars go head to head with the event co-sanctioned for the first time.

Here, we take a look at some of Major Champions, Rolex Series winners and World Number Ones who will be fighting for the trophy in North Berwick.

The American had yet to win on the PGA or DP World Tours when he lifted the Ryder Cup with the United States last autumn but a victory at the WM Phoenix Open in February changed all that and he added titles at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and WGC - Dell Technologies Match Play to move to the top of the Official World Golf Ranking. He slipped on a Green Jacket with a maiden Major triumph at the Masters Tournament and will be making his second appearance in Scotland after finishing in a tie for 12th last season. “I enjoyed the week at the Scottish Open last year and I’m looking forward to getting back to the Renaissance Club in July for the start of an exciting two weeks in Scotland,” he said. “I had heard a lot about the event and the Rolex Series before I played for the first time, and it lived up to it. A lot has happened for me since then, and I’m hoping to keep that good feeling going over the summer."

The Spaniard will be looking to go alone at the top of the list of Rolex Series winners when he makes his second appearance at Scotland's national open after last season's top ten. A two-time winner of the Irish Open and DP World Tour Championship, Dubai, the 27-year-old also won his own country's open twice before winning his first Major at last season's U.S. Open Championship and has had his own spell at the top of the World Rankings. “I’m looking forward to coming back to Renaissance Club for the Genesis Scottish Open this summer and the start of an exciting two weeks in Scotland," he said. "I’ve had success in Rolex Series events in the past and adding another win would be the perfect way to go into The Open in St Andrews the following week. I know this is an event with a long history and it’s great to see it become part of both the PGA TOUR and DP World Tour this season.”

Since turning professional in June 2019, the American has won two Major Championships, a WGC title and claimed his first Rolex Series title with victory at the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai, en route to winning the Harry Vardon Trophy. Among his other achievements last year, reigning Open Champion Morikawa was part of the victorious United States Ryder Cup team at Whistling Straits and finished in a tie for fourth at the Olympic Men's Golf Tournament after a seven man play-off for bronze. “I can’t wait to return to the Renaissance Club in July," he said. "Making my debut in the Scottish Open last year was huge – it was a great learning experience and it all paid off the following week. I hope to have two great weeks in front of the Scottish fans this July, and I would love to lift the Genesis Scottish Open trophy before going on to defend the Claret Jug.”

Former World Number One Thomas made his first start as a professional in Scotland, at the 2013 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. The 29-year-old, who won the 2017 US PGA Championship and lifted the Wanamaker Trophy for the second time this year, has 14 PGA TOUR wins. He has recorded top ten finishes in his two previous appearances in Scotland’s national open in 2019 and 2021. “I have a lot of great memories from playing in Scotland at different points in my career, and this is shaping up to be an exciting summer with the Genesis Scottish Open at the Renaissance Club, followed by The 150th Open in St Andrews," he said. "I’ve always said that I want to win around the world, and I would love to build on my previous results in this event and pick up a first Rolex Series title.”

The Australian will arrive in Scotland looking for a maiden Rolex Series victory to add to his two DP World Tour wins claimed on home soil after he lifted the trophy at the Australian PGA Championship in the 2018 and 2019 seasons. The 28-year-old has developed a taste for the big stage, winning the prestigious Players Championship on the PGA TOUR in March just before claiming his third consecutive top ten at the Masters Tournament. He will be making his debut at Renaissance but second appearance at Scotland's national open, having made the cut in 2018.

The American has been one of the most in-form golfers in the world over the last 12 months, having won the 2021 FedEx Cup after closing out an impressive season with victories in two of the three FedEx Cup Play-Off events. The 30-year-old also has a win under his belt in 2022 alongside Ryder Cup team-mate Xander Schauffele at April’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans, taking his tally of PGA TOUR crowns to seven in less than five years. “I’m excited to make my Genesis Scottish Open debut next month,” he said. “To play back-to-back weeks in Scotland, the Home of Golf, will be awesome and hopefully I can bring my A-game for the Scottish fans.”

The trailblazing Norwegian already has one Rolex Series title to his name in 2022 after winning the Slync.io Dubai Desert Classic in January. That victory came just seven months after he became the first Norwegian winner in DP World Tour history and he also has three wins on the PGA Tour to his name. The 24-year-old made his Ryder Cup debut for Europe last year and will be teeing it up for the first time at the Genesis Scottish Open.

Burns will make his second appearance at the historic event, following a top-20 finish on his debut at Renaissance Club last year. The 25-year-old has taken his tally of PGA TOUR titles to four with two wins this season, lifting the Valspar Championship trophy for the second time in March, before overhauling a seven-shot deficit and going on to defeat World Number One Scheffler in a play-off at the Charles Schwab Challenge. “I enjoyed teeing it up at the Renaissance Club last season and this year the Genesis Scottish Open is shaping up to be another great week, especially leading in to The Open at St Andrews,” he said.

U.S. Open champion Fitzpatrick will make a ninth consecutive appearance at the Genesis Scottish Open this summer, having missed out on winning the title for the first time last year in a play-off against Thomas Detry and champion Min Woo Lee. The Englishman won his first Rolex Series title in 2020 after prevailing at the season-ending DP World Tour Championship, Dubai, and became a Major winner for the first time at The Country Club, Brookline in June. “I would love to add to my Rolex Series victories at the Genesis Scottish Open, particularly after coming so close last year," he said. "It’s a tournament that has been ever-present on my schedule throughout my professional career, and it’s exciting to see it co-sanctioned by both the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR this season."

Reigning Olympic champion Schauffele will be making a second consecutive appearance at Renaissance having finished in the top ten on his debut last season. The American was already a two-time winner on the PGA TOUR when he won his maiden DP World Tour and World Golf Championships title at the WGC-HSBC Champions in 2018 and has since added two more worldwide wins. A man for the big occasion, he has nine top tens from 20 Major Championship appearances and is relishing the chance to take on a world-class field. “I loved this event when I played last year so I am delighted to be returning this summer,” he said. “The field is going to be incredible and it looks like we’re all set for a fantastic week in front of some of the best fans in golf.”

Spieth will make his Genesis Scottish Open debut in the week before The 150th Open at St Andrews. Already a three-time Major winner, Spieth first claimed the Claret Jug in 2017 after triumphing in the 2015 Masters and U.S. Open. The American, who won the FedExCup in 2015, returned to the top 10 in the Official World Golf Ranking following his 13th PGA TOUR title at the RBC Heritage in April. “I’ve heard a lot about the Genesis Scottish Open and the Renaissance Club and I’m looking forward to making my debut as part of an exciting two weeks in Scotland this summer," the former World Number One said. “It’s a historic tournament that always has a strong field and position on the schedule. I’ve won in Australia in the past and this would be the perfect place to add another overseas victory to my resumé.”

Matsuyama made history in 2021 when he became the first male Japanese Major Champion by winning the Masters Tournament - ten years after finishing as low amateur on his debut at Augusta National. He can also boast two World Golf Championships titles among his 17 worldwide wins and will be making his second appearance in Scotland's national open. “It’s exciting to be playing in this historic event for the first time in four years and making my debut at the Renaissance Club," he said. "I know that the Genesis Scottish Open has a special spot in the schedule in the week before The Open, and I’m looking forward to the summer in Scotland.”

Horschel won his seventh PGA TOUR title at the Memorial Tournament in June and last season he became just the second American - and the first since Arnold Palmer in 1975 - to lift the BMW PGA Championship trophy, capturing his first Rolex Series title in the process. The 2014 FedExCup winner said: “I was hugely proud to win at Wentworth last season and I would love to add another Rolex Series win on European soil at the Genesis Scottish Open. It’s a great event and it’s a bonus that it is now co-sanctioned by the PGA TOUR too.”

Six-time DP World Tour winner Hatton will make his eighth appearance at the Genesis Scottish Open, with his best previous finish coming in 2016 when he finished as runner up to future Ryder Cup team-mate Alex Noren at Castle Stuart Golf Links. The 30-year-old Englishman - who claimed a record-equalling fourth Rolex Series title at the 2021 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship - has previously enjoyed success in Scotland, securing back to back Alfred Dunhill Links Championship titles in 2016 and 2017. “I always enjoy playing in the Genesis Scottish Open and would love to go one better than my 2016 result and win a fifth Rolex Series title in July," he said. "It’s shaping up to be an exciting two weeks in a row in Scotland with The Open taking place at the Old Course at St Andrews - where I’ve had success in the past - the following week.”

Fleetwood came agonisingly close to winning at Renaissance Club in 2020, losing out to Aaron Rai in a play-off, and the two-time Ryder Cup player also claimed his maiden DP World Tour title on Scottish soil back in 2013. The 31-year-old, who won the Race to Dubai - now the DP World Tour Rankings - in 2017, will be targeting a third Rolex Series title as he looks to build on a solid season so far which has included a top five at the US PGA Championship. “I love playing in Scotland and the fans are always incredible so it will be great to get back there for what is set to be a cracking week,” he said. “I feel like my game is coming together nicely so hopefully I can give the crowds something to cheer about at the Renaissance Club.”

A win in this event in 2014 is part of the remarkable of CV of Rose, who has Major, Rolex Series, Olympic and World Golf Championships titles to his name along with being World Number One and topping the Rankings on both sides of the Atlantic. This will be his 11th appearance in this event and first since 2018. "It was an incredible experience to lift this trophy back in 2014," he said. "I love playing in front of the Scottish fans so I’m really looking forward to teeing it up at the Renaissance Club. With the tournament co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and the PGA TOUR it looks like this is going to be a huge occasion for everyone involved, but especially for the fans.”

Defending champion Min Woo Lee returns to Renaissance Club - scene of his greatest victory so far - seeking to win his second Rolex Series title. The Australian's play-off success was his second DP World Tour victory, following his win on home soil at the ISPS Handa Vic Open in 2020, as he finished last season inside the top 50 on the Official World Golf Ranking. On his debut at the Masters Tournament in April, Lee shot a record-tying front nine of six-under-par 30 in the final round to finish tied 15th at Augusta National Golf Club. “Last year at the Renaissance Club was such an awesome experience. I was proud of my game on Sunday and how I closed out the play-off for my first Rolex Series title," he said. “It was a huge win and opened up even more experiences, like playing in The Open for the first time the following week. My aim is to keep my hands on that trophy this season.”

MacIntyre will be making a fourth consecutive appearance in his home open. The 25-year-old burst onto the scene in 2019, picking up the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Award after a season that included three runner-up finishes and a tie for sixth place in his Major Championship debut at The Open. He followed up on that promise by winning his first DP World Tour title the following season at the 2020 Aphrodite Hills Cyprus Showdown. The Scotsman views the Genesis Scottish Open as the 'fifth Major' and is looking forward to playing in front of a full home crowd once again. “There’s nothing better than playing in front of Scottish fans, and it’s safe to say it would be a dream come true to win my home open," he said.

Willett’s Major breakthrough came in 2016, when he became the first European for 17 years to win the Masters Tournament. The English Ryder Cup player has also enjoyed recent success in Scotland, winning his eighth DP World Tour title at the 2021 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. “I’m looking forward to getting back to the Genesis Scottish Open this summer,” said the two-time Rolex Series winner. “It’s a tournament that I’ve always enjoyed playing, and I’m excited that it’s co-sanctioned by the PGA TOUR now as well.”

Molinari achieved his greatest career victory in Scotland, the Home of Golf, when he claimed his first Major title in The Open at Carnoustie in 2018. That historic win was part of a stellar year that saw the six-time DP World Tour winner claim five points from five at the Ryder Cup in Paris and go on to become the first Italian to be crowned European Number One. “My Open victory in Carnoustie was a career highlight, so it’s no surprise that Scotland holds great memories for me,” said Molinari, whose previous Scottish Open results also include a runner-up finish in 2012. “I’ve always enjoyed playing this tournament over the years and it’s exciting that it leads into another Open in Scotland this season.”
