The Debrief: AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open

Rasmus Højgaard won a dramatic play-off at the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open to become the third youngest winner in European Tour history.

Højgaard keeps his cool

After birdieing the 72nd hole to force a play-off with Renato Paratore and Antoine Rozner, the Dane eagled the third extra hole to clinch the title. At 18 years and 271 days old, only Italian Matteo Manassero - who won twice as a 17-year-old - and New Zealander Danny Lee have won on the European Tour at a younger age. Højgaard came to prominence in 2018 as he won the Eisenhower Trophy for Denmark alongside identical twin Nicolai and John Axelsen, and played with his brother at the Junior Ryder Cup. The winner said: "To be on the European Tour so early is a dream come true and to be a winner now, it's incredible. I can't put it into words."

Rookie Rozner almost takes title

Rozner came within a whisker of the title in only his sixth European Tour appearance. The 26-year-old, who graduated from the European Challenge Tour last season, had a share of the lead heading into the final round. A stunning bunker shot and two putts after hitting the green in two helped him record gains on the first two trips back up the par five last but he could not match Højgaard's eagle at the third time of asking. "Everything comes down to one play-off hole," said Rozner. "I made some amazing birdies on the first two play-off holes. I have nothing to regret. I gave my best."

Allez les Bleus

Rozner was one of four Frenchmen that finished in the top 12 in Mauritius. Benjamin Hebert was a shot behind the play-off in a four-way tie for fourth, while rookie Robin Sciot-Siegrist went 65-65 over the weekend - the lowest score over the last two rounds - to finish an impressive eighth on 17 under. Julien Guerrier was a further stroke behind in a tie for ninth to round off an impressive tournament for French golfers, with three more in the top 50.

Paratore goes close

The Italian may have come up short in the play-off but he can take many positives from the week. His Saturday 66 was his first bogey-free effort in 48 rounds, with his last blemish-free day coming at the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open. He said: "I missed some short putts from two metres but I played the par fives solid so I made a lot of birdies. The long game is good but in general this week everything has been consistent."

Detry wait goes on

Thomas Detry has been on the verge of a maiden European Tour victory for what feels like a very long time. His tie for fourth leaves him with 14 top tens from 85 European Tour events - and three in his last five. The Belgian was a shot away from joining the play-off, but surely his first victory is coming soon? But while the win eluded him in Mauritius, he ensured he enjoyed his down time on the island.
