The Debrief: 2020 Celtic Classic

Everything you need to know from last week's tournament at The Celtic Manor Resort.

Sam Horsfield

Sam Horsfield was back in the winner's circle and Thomas Pieters performed brilliantly on his return to professional golf during an eventful week at the 2020 Celtic Classic.

Here, we take a look at the highlights from the latest leg of the UK Swing.

Horsfield wins again

Englishman Horsfield secured his second title just 14 days after claiming his first to become the first ever player on the European Tour to win an event, miss the cut and then win again in three consecutive weeks. He overcame a two hour weather delay and fading light on Sunday to finish two shots clear of Belgian Thomas Detry courtesy of a final round 67. The victory takes Horsfield to the top of the UK Swing Mini Order of Merit and into the top 100 on the Official World Golf Ranking - his highest ever placing in the global standings. He said: "After I missed the cut last week I was never concerned. I felt like after your first win and everything that was going on I felt a little mentally drained and I probably should have decided to take the week off. I just wasn't all there but I knew my game was in good shape so I basically just forgot about last week."

Beef's good form continues

Horsfield is joined in the top ten of the UK Swing Mini Order of Merit by his fellow Englishman Andrew 'Beef' Johnston following another productive week for the popular 31-year-old. Beef produced four rounds in the 60s to finish in a tie for third on 15 under par. His strong performance came a week after he finished in a share of 19th at the English Championship.

Pieters stars on his return to action

Belgian Pieters showed no signs of ring rust at his first tournament since March, finishing in a tie for third after making a strong start to the week. Following the European Tour's resumption, Pieters decided not to take part in the first three events of the UK Swing as he became a father for the first time. He returned with a bang, though, shooting an opening 64 to lead the way on Thursday before adding rounds of 68, 70 and 67 to finish three shots behind champion Horsfield.

Bjørn walks the walk

As the tournament was in full flow, Thomas Bjørn was walking a mammoth 210 kilometres in just four days to raise money for charity. Europe’s victorious 2018 Ryder Cup Captain carried the trophy from the European Tour’s Headquarters at Wentworth Club in Surrey to The Celtic Manor Resort and will donate the funds raised to UNICEF and the Golf Foundation as part of the European Tour's #GolfforGood initiative. Bjørn reached Celtic Manor on Sunday and has, so far, raised over £31,000. Well done, Thomas.

Blistering Björk's rapid round

What is it with Swedish golfers and quick rounds? Earlier this season at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic Sebastian Soderberg recorded the fastest round in European Tour history at 97 minutes. Countryman Alexander Björk could not quite match that in Newport but his 159 minute effort after going out solo in the first group of the day on Saturday was pretty impressive, even more so considering he fired a 66.
