The 150th Open Championship - Day one digest

Everything you need to know from day one at St Andrews.

Hovland

Cameron set the pace thanks to a flawless effort on his Open Championship debut, while Viktor finished with a flourish to climb into contention during the first round of the 150th Open.

Here is everything you need to know from day one at St Andrews.

Young the man to catch after spotless opening round

Cameron Young's first ever Open Championship round was a bogey-free 64 which sent him straight to the top of the leaderboard on day one. The American turned in 31 after making five birdies on the front side before picking up three more shots on the back nine to get to eight under as others struggled on the Old Course. He said: "I think we worked our way around the golf course really well. I don't think that I played a perfect round of golf. I scored really well. And I think we thought our way around kind of the way you have to out there."

Amateur Brown shoots stunning 68

Barclay Brown - remember the name. The 21-year-old amateur was making his first competitive appearance at St Andrews on Thursday morning, having played there as a boy, and he took it in his stride, notching five birdies, with his only blemish a bogey at the tenth. Brown is a member of Hallamshire Golf Club, the Sheffield club whose famous members include U.S. Open Champion Matt Fitzpatrick, and he is aiming to emulate Fitzpatrick's achievement at the 2013 edition of The Open. Brown, who birdied the tricky 17th from 63 feet, said: "I want to win the Silver Medal. And then beyond that just put four good rounds together."

No putter required for Kim at the 17th

After failing to get out of a bunker with his third shot at the tough 17th hole, Si Woo Kim looked to be staring a bogey in the face - or maybe even worse. But he somehow holed his second effort from the sand for the unlikeliest of pars. How good is this?

Viktor's big finish

After making three birdies and two bogeys in his opening 15 holes, Norwegian Viktor Hovland's round sprang into life in the closing stages. He reeled off a hat-trick of closing birdies at the 16th, difficult 17th and 18th to get to four under and sit four shots behind leader Young.

Rory starts well at a Major once again

Rory McIlroy has made a habit of getting off to a fast start at Major Championships, having led the 2022 US PGA Championship after 18 holes in May and sat in a tie for second at the same stage of last month's U.S. Open Championship. The 33-year-old was in familiar territory again at St Andrews on Thursday, as seven birdies and a single bogey saw him reach six under par and become leader Young's nearest challenger. McIlroy, who is aiming to secure a fifth Major title this week - and his first since 2014 - wants to maintain his charge on day two. He said: "I need to go out tomorrow and back up what I just did today."
