Sullivan makes his move in Pennsylvania

Andy Sullivan was making a charge up the leaderboard as the second round of the weather-delayed US Open got under way at Oakmont Country Club.

The Englishman was one of 78 players facing 36 holes on day two, with none of the second wave of first round starters able to tee-off on Thursday.

Big-hitting American Dustin Johnson was another player in that situation and while he joined first-round leader and countryman Andrew Landry on four under at the top of the leaderboard, Sullivan turned in 32 to sit just two shots behind.

Landry hit just a single shot on Friday when he sank a ten-footer for birdie to register a 66 - the lowest first round in US Open history at Oakmont - and he will begin his second round on Saturday morning along with the rest of the first round's first wave.

Heavy rain on Thursday and overnight had softened up the fearsome Pennsylvania layout but only 11 players ended the first round under par and that only increased by one in the early stages of round two.

Johnson was playing beautifully, however, with no bogeys in 27 holes and 25 greens hit in regulation as he followed up his opening 67 with a birdie on the 13th after putting his tee-shot to eight feet.

Fellow American Scott Piercy was three under after 11 holes of his second round to sit a shot off the leaders alongside Englishman Lee Westwood, who had earlier signed for an opening 67 and was due to tee-off at 8.28am on Saturday.

But it was Sullivan making a charge through the field and after an opening 71, he took advantage of the par five 12th before holing putts of 14 and 11 feet on the 17th and 18th to make his move.

He was alongside Irishman Shane Lowry - another set to begin his second round on Saturday - and one clear of Spaniard Sergio Garcia, who had made the turn in one over par after an opening 68.

Jim Furyk, the 2003 champion, was also at one under after seven holes, a shot clear of a group including England's Lee Slattery who had six holes to play.
