A magnificent wedge from the semi-rough on the eighteenth to two feet, ensured Germany's Sven Strüver held onto the lead going into the final round of the Mercedes-Benz Vodacom South African Open at Stellanbosch.
Strüver had faced a similar length shot on the twelth hole, but this one had found the water guarding the green, the resulting triple bogey eight signalling an end to his dominance of this event. After eleven holes of the third round he had led by five.
Jeev Singh of India made a decisive move up the leaderboard with a best-of-the-day equalling 68 to leave him on three under par, three shots behind, continuing his excellent start to the 1999 European Tour season following his third place finish in the Alfred Duhill PGA Championship.
Defending champion Ernie Els lies in eighth position, four strokes off the lead, after a round of one-under-par 70, a performance spoiled by bogeys on the 16th and 17th.
