Strong field confirmed for Valderrama

An elite group of international players led by two-time Major winner Martin Kaymer will tee it off next week at Real Club Valderrama for the 90th edition of the Open de España, hosted by the Sergio García Foundation.

Martin Kaymer

Kaymer will be one of the main attractions of this year’s event. With 11 European Tour titles to his name, including two Majors – the 2014 US Open and the 2010 PGA Championship – Kaymer immortalised himself in the golfing history books by holing the putt that ensured Europe retained the Ryder Cup at Medinah.

The German will face stern opposition from international players ranked in the world top 50 such as England's Andy Sullivan and Chris Wood, France’s Victor Dubuisson and Denmark’s Søren Kjeldsen, winner of four titles including the Volvo Masters, the season-ending event at Valderrama, in 2008.

England’s James Morrison will look to successfully defend the title he won 12 months ago at R.C.G. El Prat. He will also be joined by fellow countryman and five-time European Tour winner Ross Fisher.

Three 2016 European Tour Season winners will also be present this week: South African duo Brandon Stone and Haydn Porteous and India’s SSP Chawrasia.

Other European Tour big names such as Thomas Pieters, Thorbjørn Olesen, Nicolas Colsaerts and Matteo Manassero have confirmed their attendance, as well as past winners Thomas Levet, Raphaël Jacquelin, Niclas Fasth, Peter Hanson, Kenneth Ferrie Jarmo Sandelin and Thomas Bjørn, who became the first Dane to play in the Ryder Cup when he was part of the European Team at Real Club Valderrama in 1997.

Søren Kjeldsen said: “It’s great to play the Spanish Open at Valderrama. I love the course – I finished second, first, second the last three times I played there, so for me it’s a dream come true that we are going back.

“I love the place and I love playing the golf you need to play around there. You need to keep it straight and it gets windy round there, so it suits my game. I’ve got some special memories of my win there and it will be great to go back.”

The Real Club Valderrama Open de España Hosted by the Sergio García Foundation is promoted by the European Tour, with the support of Real Federación Española de Golf and the Spanish High Council for Sports. Sponsors for this year's tournament are Reale, Rolex, Avis, Canon, Heineken, Osborne, Solán de Cabras and Volvo.
