Stenson wins 10th European Tour title with BMW International Open triumph

Henrik Stenson won his 10th European Tour title as he held his nerve down the stretch to claim a three-shot victory at the BMW International Open at Golf Club Gut Lärchenhof to climb to sixth place in the Race to Dubai rankings.

The Swede did a clean sweep in 2013 when he heroically clinched both the DP World Tour Championship and the Race to Dubai before defending his title at the season-ending showcase in Dubai the following year.

The 40 year old is already assured of a place in this year’s grand finale which gets underway at Jumeirah Golf Estates from Thursday 17 to Sunday 20 November.

On Sunday the Gothenburg-born player had to tackle 36 holes after rain delays prevented him from taking to the course on day three and he signed for a third round 67 in the morning to open up a one-shot lead.

However, he made three bogeys in five holes from the sixth in round four and when South Africa's Darren Fichardt made his third birdie of the day on the 13th, the lead was shared.

But Stenson had birdied all four of the par fives in the morning and he took advantage of the 13th and 15th again before driving the 17th for another birdie and a 17-under-par winning total.

"It’s brilliant to welcome Henrik Stenson back to Dubai for his seventh visit to the season-ending finale," said Nick Tarratt, Director, European Tour International Dubai Office.

"He is a fans’ favourite and an Earth course specialist having had three top-ten finishes, including two wins in the DP World Tour Championship."

Elsewhere, Fichardt finished joint runner-up with Thorbjørn Olesen, and both of them have made big strides in the Race to Dubai rankings.

Each of them claimed 173,710 points, with Fichardt making a massive jump from 152nd to 70th and he will be eager to win more points to break into the top 60 and into contention to compete in the prestigious season-ending DP World Tour Championship, which is open only to the top 60 players.

Olesen moved from 30th to 19th, amassing a season-total of 654,436, therefore assuring a place in the DP World Tour Championship.

The experienced Sergio Garcia continues to climb the Race to Dubai rankings as he broke into the top 10 after finishing tied fifth in the tournament.

The Spaniard claimed 77,400 points and he now has a season-total of 845,820 points.

Frenchman Raphaël Jacquelin finished fourth in the tournament, claiming 100,000 points and moved from 98th to 67th as he continues to hunt down a spot in the DP World Tour Championship.

General admission to the DP World Tour Championship is free of charge. For more information please visithere.
