Stenson soaring with early eagle

Henrik Stenson eagled the fourth hole to move to within a shot of the lead during the final round of the US PGA Championship.

The 37 year old, looking to become the first Swedish man to win a Major Championship, bogeyed the first but consolidated with pars at the second and third.

The former Ryder Cup star, third at the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open and second at both The Open Championship and WGC-Bridgestone Invitational on his last two starts, then fired a brilliant second to the heart of the green at the par five next and sunk the 15 foot eagle putt.

At eight under he was one behind Jim Furyk – the American starting with three straight pars.

His playing partner Jason Dufner did likewise to sit alongside Stenson on eight under at Oak Hill, with Jason Day and Scott Piercy both six under for their round and the tournament to share fourth with Adam Scott.

Stenson dropped a shot at the seventh but got it straight back at the next to turn in 34 and remain eight under.

That was three behind Dufner – the player lost this event in a play-off to Keegan Bradley two years ago – who birdied the fourth fifth and eighth.

Furyk was one under for the day and ten under overall after holing a monster birdie putt at the short sixth.
