Stenson keeping cool at Baltusrol

Henrik Stenson insisted it would be business as usual over the weekend at the US PGA Championship after he put himself in a good position to claim a second Major Championship in as many weeks.

The Swede arrived at Baltusrol Golf Club off the back of his brilliant victory at The Open Championship 12 days ago, when he closed with a 63 to set a host of records and claim his first Major at Royal Troon.

A second consecutive 67 in New Jersey - the highlight of which was a stunning eagle on the 18th as he put his approach to three feet - left Stenson just three shots behind joint leaders Robert Streb and Jimmy Walker heading into the final 36 holes.

With history beckoning once again, you could forgive the 40 year old for looking ahead to Sunday afternoon, but the player they call the Iceman has no intention of changing his approach.

"I'm very happy to be able to follow up the success at Troon with a couple of strong rounds here and be in a good position," he said. "We know it's a marathon, not a sprint.

It's all about being there for Sunday afternoon and so far, so good. You're not winning anything on a Thursday and a Friday but you can put yourself in the wrong direction early days - Henrik Stenson

"So I'm happy with that. I think I played some great shots out there, and maybe a few that weren't so great, but all in all I'm very pleased with that round today.

"I'm going to stick to my game plan. The work I did with my caddie earlier in the week, we put a plan in place on how we think we play the course the best for myself and my game and that's worked pretty well.

"I'll just try and keep on plodding away and give myself plenty of chances and hopefully take advantage of them when they arise. I'm not going to do anything different, really."

World Number One Jason Day was a shot ahead of Stenson after a remarkable 65 that included seven birdies in eight holes.

The Australian was level par after he double-bogeyed the seventh but some zoned-in iron play and fantastic long-putting saw him surge up the leaderboard and put himself in a good position to successfully defend his title.

"I kind of gave myself a little bit of a kick in the bum, especially with the double bogey on seven," he said. "It was a bit of a mess there. With that said, being able to come back and birdie eight and nine really made things a lot better for me on the back side.

"I just kept on setting myself up for opportunities. Even when I was kind of out of position, either in a fairway bunker or just in the rough, I had perfect angles. So that was quite nice.

"If it was on a Sunday, it would be the best. But since it's on a Friday, it's just a good solid round.

Getting myself in contention is where we want to be by Sunday and obviously playing and shooting 65 today is that one step closer - Jason Day

"Saturday is moving day, as everyone knows. If I can have a good one tomorrow, it will come down to the last day. So it's always exciting to be in contention. I'm super stoked about what happened today."
