Stars align for Mauritius finale

The stars of the 2016 European Senior Tour are set to converge on Mauritius for the season-ending MCB Tour Championship, where Paul Broadhurst will be crowned the winner of the John Jacobs Trophy.

With 48 players travelling to the tropical surroundings of Constance Belle Mare Plage, a European Tour Destination, nine of this season’s 11 winners will challenge for the €450,000 on offer from December 9-11.

With an unassailable lead in the Order of Merit, Broadhurst has had a 2016 season to remember. The 51 year old produced a career-defining performance to capture the Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex, courtesy of a bogey-free final round 68 over the notoriously tough Carnoustie links to finish with an 11 under par total of 277.

A runner up at the SSE Enterprise Wales Senior Open and WINSTONgolf Senior Open, the Englishman’s previous best in Mauritius was tied tenth in 2015, as Colin Montgomerie won the event with a scintillating 15 under par, claiming the John Jacobs Trophy for the second consecutive year in the process.

The Scot, an eight-time winner of the Senior Tour, is certainly comfortable with the coastal surroundings having finished inside the top ten for the past three years.

The Senior Tour’s most recent winner, Welshman Stephen Dodd, will be one to watch after taking the title at the Senior Italian Open presented by Villaverde Resort, having finishing tied second in the Paris Legends Championship just weeks prior to his maiden win.

Englishman Paul Eales will be looking to better his tied third finish last year, as will compatriot Gary Marks. Also in the hunt for a second title this season is Swede Magnus P Atlevi, Switzerland’s André Bossert, and American Tim Thelen.

South Africa’s David Frost and England’s Paul Wesselingh return to the course in Mauritius that has previously been the home of great success for both on the Senior Tour, with two wins a piece, they will be calling on all of their past knowledge and experience to challenge for the title on the idyllic Indian Ocean island.
