Spieth stays ahead at Augusta

Jordan Spieth maintained his two-shot lead on day two of the Masters Tournament as the chasing pack failed to take full advantage of the favourable early conditions at Augusta National.

With the wind expected to get up in the afternoon and the defending champion among the later starters, the stage was set for some of the chasing pack to put the pressure on the World Number Two.

But Spieth, who became the first player in Masters history to hold the outright lead for five consecutive rounds with his 66 on Thursday, was able to watch on as only World Number One Jason Day made a major move in the second round.

The Australian came home in 41 in the first round to drop back to level par but, despite a bogey on the first, he made birdies on the second, fifth and eighth to turn in 34 and get within four shots of the lead.

Danny Lee had closed the gap to one shot with a birdie on the second but he was level par for his round through 11 holes.

European Tour Members Sergio Garcia and Søren Kjeldsen were level par for their rounds at three under after six and seven holes respectively, alongside Scott Piercy, who picked up a stroke through eight holes.

Justin Rose and Paul Casey were also at three under with their second rounds yet to get under way, while Danny Willett was a shot further back and level for the day at two under after six holes.

Shane Lowry was also two under through six holes having dropped shots on the first and second.

World Number Three Rory McIlroy had got to four under with birdies on the second and third but a three-putt double-bogey after finding sand on the fourth and another dropped shot on the next dropped him back.
