Spain ahead in mixed competition

Spain were two strokes clear at the top of the leaderboard as the teams tackled the back nine at the innovative Mixed Team event at the European Golf Team Championships on Saturday afternoon.

The format for this revolutionary one-day competition is foursomes stroke play, with two mixed pairs representing the same team at Gleneagles.

Their 18-hole totals are added together and the team with the lowest score will win gold, with silver and bronze medals on offer for those who finish second and third.

Spain were in pole position to win gold after Noemi Jimenez's eagle from around 20 feet at the ninth and birdies from Silvia Banon and Jimenez at the 11th hole in their respective pairings took them to three under par.

Sweden 2 were Spain's nearest challengers on one under after Oscar Floren and Johanna Gustavsson finished their round with back-to-back birdies.

Iceland had started brightly, opening up a two-shot lead in the early stages, but they slipped back to one over par after Axel Boasson and Olafia Kristinsdottir followed up four straight birdies from the second with three bogeys in their next five holes and Valdis Thora Jonsdottir and Birgir Hafthorsson carded back-to-back bogeys at the 14th and 15th.
