Jack Singh Brar is looking to cap off an extraordinary debut season on the European Challenge Tour and stay inside the Road to Ras Al Khaimah top 15 with European Tour graduation right around the corner.
Twelve months ago, Singh Brar had just turned professional and was applying his game on the Alps Tour. Now, the Englishman is within touching distance of a European Tour card following his sensational maiden Challenge Tour season.
Singh Brar started 2018 with his first professional victory at the Red Sea Little Venice Open on the Alps Tour. Two months later he claimed a runner-up finish in his debut Challenge Tour start at the Turkish Airlines Challenge.
Back-to-back top ten results in the summer were followed by another a month later, before he clinched his first Challenge Tour title at the Cordon Golf Open, less than a year since he joined the paid ranks.
Now the Road to Ras Al Khaimah Number Ten heads to the Foshan Open for the first time, aiming to continue his impressive form after making 13 cuts from his 15 events on the Challenge Tour. With only two events left on Europe’s top developmental tour, Singh Brar is trying to remain calm with the prospect of earning European Tour status sitting firmly in his own hands.
“My rookie year on the Challenge Tour has been amazing,” he said.
“At the start of the season I was playing a few Alps Tour events, just to play some golf, then if my Challenge Tour events didn’t go to plan I would jump back on the Alps Tour and then try and get my Challenge Tour card that way.
“I played pretty well during the start of the season, then the win pushed me very close to the 100,000 points mark. I hadn’t really looked at the numbers before, but people say that 100,000 ranking points is pretty good, and you’ll be safe. You have to keep pushing though as you want to be as high as possible, so you can get into more events. At the start of the season I would’ve taken this position all day long. I had a few starts on the European Tour but the results were here and there, but I look forward to getting back out there if I get my card.”
The 21 year old got his first glimpse of playing in China at the Hainan Open last week, where he carded rounds of 72-72-73-70 to finish tied 37th. Although Singh Brar admits he was not at his best in Sanya City, he is looking forward to the next challenge and making his Foshan Open debut.
“It’s been fun in China,” he said. “Last week wasn’t my finest golf but I put a few more ranking points to my name, and it’s been an enjoyable week so far in Foshan.
“The golf course is good. If you hit the ball long and straight, you’ll score pretty well. It’s a little more testing in parts, compared to last week.
“I spoke to a few boys about the Foshan course last week. I think it’s a lot different to before because players are saying it’s quite firm on the greens, but with the rain I think it has softened up. Also, I’ve heard we’ll get a lot of spectators.”
