Siem would love history to repeat itself at Alfred Dunhill Championship

Former champion Marcel Siem admitted there may be tears if he is able to get his hands on the Alfred Dunhill Championship trophy again this week after making a solid start to the tournament on Thursday.

The German claimed his maiden European Tour victory at the 2004 dunhill championship after overcoming Frenchmen Raphaël Jacquelin and Grégory Havret in a tense play-off when the event was held at Houghton Golf Club.

Siem, now a four time European Tour winner at the age of 40, posted an opening 69 at Leopard Creek Country Club on day one to sit four shots behind first round leaders Robin Roussel and Adrian Meronk.

He has fond memories of his first win and would love history to repeat itself this week.

Siem said: "It's always a special event to come back to. It doesn't matter if it's Houghton or Leopard Creek.

"Your first win is always the most important one. I'm gagging for another one.

"The memories are always fantastic.

"I love South Africa, the people are always nice to me and everybody still remembers my win and I do as well.

"It was a great play-off with Raphaël Jacquelin and Grégory Havret who turned out to be my best friends on Tour afterwards as well.

"I love it, it's great. I hope I can do it again.

"If it were to happen this week I would start crying, I reckon, because it would mean so much for me to hold the trophy again.

"In 2004 I was very, very young. I didn't even realise actually what that meant, to be honest.

"I went through a play-off and it was all fun, I just hit it as hard as I could and everything went my way and all of a sudden I'm a European Tour winner at 24 years old.

"It was amazing."
