Siem surges through on home soil

Marcel Siem delighted the home fans with a birdie-birdie finish to beat Mikko Ilonen two up and progress to the last 16 of the Saltire Energy Paul Lawrie Match Play.

Ilonen had been in record-breaking form on Thursday as he beat Matthieu Pavon 8 and 7 but he could not create that magic in round two and Siem pounced with a big finish to set up a clash against Belgian Thomas Detry.

Tournament host Paul Lawrie produced a spirited fightback against Alejandro Cañizares but went down 2 and 1 and the Spaniard will next face Irishman Paul Dunne, a 4 and 3 winner over Jens Fahrbring.

There was better news for fellow Swede Johan Carlsson who defeated top seed Matthew Southgate 4 and 2 to set up a clash against Australian Marcus Fraser.

Alexander Knappe gave the home fans more to celebrate with a 5 and 4 win over Frenchman Victor Dubuisson that earned him a match against England's Tom Lewis.

Siem and Ilonen shared a classic nip-and-tuck match play contest that may not have had the best scoring but was enthralling to the very last.

A par was enough for the German to win the second but Ilonen took advantage of the par five third before a pair of pars put him two up as both men struggled to find their best in the early stages. A par won the seventh for Siem but he eagled the eighth and the duo were locked together at the turn.

Ilonen won the tenth but a bogey on the next gave the hole back before Siem edged his nose in front with a birdie on the 13th. A birdie from the Finn meant it was all square with two to play before Siem sent the crowd around the Beckenbauer Course at Golf Resort Bad Griesbach in to raptures.

"I said to myself at the beginning of the week, 'I won four tournaments and a World Cup with my emotions'," he said. "I know some weeks they got in the way for me but I think to get back on track I need my emotions - that's me.

"I think I have another ten years in front of me and I want to keep my emotions out there. I tried to be a lot calmer, that doesn't work for me and it was really enjoyable today. A few fist pumps, I hope the people liked that, it's just automatic for me it's not being a show-off - that's me."

Detry was another man to find his form late in the day as he overcame Spaniard Nacho Elvira 3 and 1. The 24 year old edged ahead with a par on the fourth but birdies on the seventh and tenth then moved Elvira in front. Detry responded with birdies on the 11th, 12th, 15th and 17th for an ultimately comfortable win.

Cañizares was three up against Lawrie after eight holes but the Scot won the ninth and 11th and produced one of the up-and-downs of the season from some nasty stuff on the 12th, holing a 15-footer to get back to all square. He edged his nose in front on the next but Cañizares won the 14th, 16th and 17th to move through.

Fahrbring won the first against Dunne but that was as good as it got for him with the former Walker Cup star winning the third, fourth and eighth with birdies before holing a 45-footer on the 11th and making another gain on the 13th.

Southgate made three birdies and an eagle in his 16 holes but could not keep pace with Carlsson who won five holes with birdies and one with a concession.

Maximilian Kieffer could not make it four Germans in the last 16 alongside Siem, Knappe and Florian Fritsch as he fell 2 and 1 to a late bombardment from Fraser.

The home favourite was three up after ten holes but Fraser birdied the 11th and 13th with a par on the 12th enough to help move him level. Birdies on the 15th and 16th then put the three-time winner in the driving seat before both men birdied the 17th with Fraser hitting the pin and finishing inches from an ace.

Knappe claimed a comfortable 5 and 4 victory over Dubuisson who picked up an eagle on the eighth but was otherwise out of sorts as the German won the third, fourth, ninth, tenth, 12th and 13th.

"It was good, I played very solid," said Knappe. "It was a good game. Always just stick to your game and play as good as you can and hopefully you win.

"It's great to have some people walking with me. It's the last event this season here and it's great that we have three events in Germany."

Lewis was in irresistible form against Zander Lombard, making five birdies and two eagles on the eighth and tenth in a 4 and 2 win.
