Siem sneaks ahead in Seville

Germany’s Marcel Siem carded four birdies before the turn at Real Club de Golf de Sevilla to overhaul first round leader Chris Doak in the Open de Andalucia de Golf 09.

The 28 year old dropped only one shot on the way out and added a further birdie at the 11th to reach eight under for the tournament, giving him a two shot lead over Spain’s Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño, Scot Doak and his compatriot Andrew Coltart.

Last year’s The Quinn Direct British Masters winner Fernandez-Castaño was two under for his second round at the turn following his opening 68 while former The Ryder Cup player Coltart - searching for a first Tour win since 2001 - was two under for the day through six.

Doak, the World Number 1,329, was yet to improve on his six under par opening round after five holes.

England’s Graeme Storm and Denmark’s Thomas Björn were leading the chasing pack on five under, the latter having admitted after the first round he had been studying those at the top of the game in an effort to return to form.

Even though he bogeyed the last two holes in his opening 68, the 38 year old Dane, without a single top ten finish in over a year, said: "That's the first time in a long, long time that I had control over the ball flight.

"After looking at the way Tiger and Sergio take the club away from the ball suddenly something dawned on me.

"I was really struggling and my neck and back have been giving me a lot of problems, but I'm trying to sort it out. It gets harder the older you get, though."
