Shubhankar Sharma taking route 66 on happy hunting ground

Shubhankar Sharma was hoping to call on good memories over the weekend after a second consecutive 66 put him right in contention for a first win in over five years at the acciona Open de España presented by Madrid.

The Indian enjoyed a stunning start to his DP World Tour career, winning in just his tenth event and following it with another three months later as he won the 2018 Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Award.

While he has been a picture of consistency since, he did not achieve another top three until this event in 2021 and since then he has had five further top tens, including a best Major Championship finish at this year's Open.

He may have made less than 50 per cent of his cuts this season, but his nine weekends have brought three top tens - including at Royal Liverpool and in the Rolex Series at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship - and he is hopeful a happy hunting ground at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid can bring more success.

"It felt consistent," he said. "A solid start and I couldn't have asked for anything for more, especially coming in from last week.

"We all came in late on Tuesday so I didn't really get a full practice round but I had good memories from the last time I played here two years ago and just kept that momentum going .

"It was a good start yesterday and I followed it up nicely today as well.

"I have good memories... that week (in 2021) I just played super, I don't think I did anything wrong and it didn't feel like I let the tournament go. I played my best and hopefully I do that this time around and hopefully it's good enough."

Sharma ranks 12th on Tour in driving accuracy this season, up from 50th in 2022, and while he may not be a man for numbers himself, he feels that improvement has been pivotal in his resurgence.

"This is a very old school course, something that I grew up on back home in India so finding fairways is a premium here and I've been doing that this whole season," he said.

"I'm not a stats guy, I don't look at that very much, but I've been finding more fairways which is great and I guess that means more birdie opportunities, more balls on the fairway and that's what I could do the last two days."
