Shubhankar Sharma joined the lead as the Maybank Championship was set for a dramatic conclusion at Saujana Golf & Country Club.
Overnight leader Jorge Campillo turned in 34 to get to 17 under and he was joined at the summit by Sharma who made six birdies in his first 12 holes.
American Berry Henson was then at 16 under, a shot clear of a group of eight players.
Indian Sharma is looking for his second title of the season after victory at the Joburg Open while a win for Campillo would be his first on the European Tour in his 196th event.
The first had been gettable all week and a host of the leading contenders picked up shots there, with Indian Khalin H Joshi getting to 15 under.
When the final group got started, South African Dylan Frittelli had to settle for a par with Henson making birdie but Campillo recorded an eagle for the second day in a row after an approach to four feet and he led by two shots.
Joshi gave his shot back on the second but birdied the third and was joined two off the lead by New Zealander Ryan Fox, who made back-to-back birdies on the fifth and sixth after eagling the first and bogeying the second.
Sharma made four birdies in a row from the fourth to get within two of the lead before Henson jumped out of that group with a putt up the hill on the third.
The 21 year old then made a long putt on the ninth to turn in 31 and get within one, while Fox birdied the same hole to join him.
Frittelli was the next man to join that group with a gain on the fifth but playing partner Campillo also took advantage of the par five to lead by two again.
Joshi made a 15-footer on the seventh to expand the group at 16 under to five but gave the shot straight back on the next, while Fox made a bogey on the tenth after going over the back of the green.
Sharma had no such trouble ahead on the 11th, playing a beautiful approach to make it six birdies in eight holes and get within one of the lead.
Frittelli then played a poor second into the eighth and he dropped into the group at 15 under alongside Fox, Joshi, Ryo Ishikawa, Mike Lorenzo-Vera, Hideto Tanihara, Romain Wattel and Lee Westwood.
Campillo got in trouble off the ninth tee and when he failed to get up and down from a bunker after finding sand with his second, he dropped to 17 under.
