Due to the delays already experienced and the forecast over the weekend, the decision has been made to cut the Shankai Classic presented by IDG to 54 holes.
In order to make this a realistic possibility the field will also be cut to the top 50 players and ties at the end of 18 holes, with the top 60 players and ties receiving prize money, as per the European Challenge Tour regulations.
Kevin Feeney, Tournament Director, said: “The course is already extremely wet after continuous rain since 1900 on Wednesday evening which, alongside the issues we have had with visibility due to low cloud since Thursday morning, has made it necessary to cut the tournament to 54 holes.
“By also instigating an 18 hole cut to the top 50 players and ties we are giving ourselves the best possible chance of completing three rounds, which is a decision that we believe is in the best interest of the tournament, considering the forecast for similar weather over the weekend.”
This decision has been made after consultation with the sponsors, the promoter and the China Golf Association, and everyone is in agreement that this is the best course of action to take.
Play resumed at 1415 local time on Friday after a delay of five hours and 45 minutes, with half of the field still to complete their first round.
