Sensational Rasmus Højgaard six shots clear at halfway stage in France

Rasmus Højgaard stormed to a six-shot lead at the halfway stage of the 2022 Cazoo Open de France after following up Thursday's 62 with a stunning 65 on day two.

Having equalled the course record in the first round, Højgaard made more history at Le Golf National on Friday as he reached 15 under par, securing the best 36-hole score to par at this tournament since hole-by-hole data began.

The 21-year-old Dane went into the second round with a two-shot cushion but picked up three straight birdies at the 15th, 16th and 17th to extend his advantage.

Another birdie followed at the first but he gave the shot back on the fifth before notching three birdies in his last four holes to set an extremely testing clubhouse target.

And none of the afternoon starters were able to get close to Højgaard's total, with Frenchman Paul Barjon his nearest challenger on nine under.

Barjon holed an eagle putt from 61 feet at the par-five 14th as well as making two birdies and one bogey in a second-round 68.

South Africa's George Coetzee sat alone in third a shot further back after signing for a 66.

Højgaard started his second round at the tenth tee and safely parred his first five holes before opening his birdie account at the 15th.

He sent his tee-shot at the short 16th to 13 feet before rolling in the putt for a second successive birdie.

A seven-foot birdie at the 17th saw Højgaard complete the hat-trick as he turned in 32.

After holing a lengthy birdie putt on the first green, the three-time DP World Tour winner dropped his first shot of the day at the fifth.

But he made amends with back-to-back birdies at the sixth and seventh before a good par save on the eighth kept the momentum going.

Højgaard finished his round with a birdie at the ninth to head into the clubhouse on 15 under.

He said: "The course plays tricky, I just played very good as well today.

"I hit a lot of greens and gave myself some good chances.

"I kept the bogeys away, more or less, so it's good.

"I'm not going to change much over the next couple of days. It's been working fine so far.

"So again, go out there, be patient, see if I can limit the mistakes and make a few birdies."

Alexander Björk and Antoine Rozner were in a tie for fourth on seven under.

Barjon relished playing in front of such large home crowds, saying: "It was cool to have a lot of fans, even at 7pm, but we have great weather and I think they liked what they saw, so it was fun to have some cheering on the last nine holes.

"Usually playing that late people are packing and going home because it’s getting late.

"Having a chance to win a tournament but especially your home open would be lovely. That’s still the goal, to show up on Sunday on the back nine and have a chance to win."
