Seniors supporting Japan relief fund

Stars from the European Senior Tour have been giving their support to the ongoing relief effort following the devastating earthquake  and tsunami which hit Japan in March.

Players helped raise money at a fundraising auction at the ISPS Handa Senior Masters presented by The Stapleford Forum, which will help rebuild the communities affected by the earthquake and tsunami.

Among the lots sold was the chance to caddy for Ian Woosnam at the Par 3 contest at next year’s Masters Tournament. Collections will also take place throughout the tournament days.

The Senior Tour players are supporting the initiative launched by ISPS (International Sports Promotion Society) and its Chairman Dr Haruhisa Handa through the ISPS Handa Japan Relief Fund.

Former Ryder Cup Captains Sam Torrance and Woosnam are Ambassadors for the ISPS and were among the Senior Tour players helping the fundraising drive at Stapleford Park ahead of the second edition of the tournament.

Dr Handa, who is also an International Ambassador for the European Senior Tour, said: “We are delighted with the work that all our Ambassadors are doing to help towards the ISPS Handa Japan Relief Fund. Their support is very much appreciated and will help us make great strides towards helping those in need.”

Torrance added: "I was horrified to watch events unfolding in Japan back in March.  It was difficult to believe that was happening on our planet.   My heart went out to everyone in Japan as they are surely going to have a long and difficult road back to normality, and we should all do everything that we can to support them"

David J Russell, Chairman of the European Senior Tour committee, said: “The tsunami was a frightening thing and anything we can do to help towards the relief effort we will do. Dr Hand’s support of the Senior Tour has been incredible and hopefully we can raise a good amount for the relief appeal this week and really get behind it.”
