Schwartzel makes his move

Charl Schwartzel carded a hole in one as he moved himself into contention before thunder storms forced the third round of the Joburg Open to be suspended.

With the leaders only a couple of holes into their third round before the weather interruption, Schwartzel took the opportunity to fire himself up the leaderboard.

Having been tied for 49th on three under at the start of the day the South African raced to six under for the day after 16 holes and a tie for fourth – although at one stage he was level with David Drysdale at the top on 11 under.

Schwartzel enjoyed six birdies in an outward 30 before embarking on a remarkable back nine which has two holes still remaining.

He birdied the tenth, and then missed a two foot putt at the 11th to record a double bogey – prompting him to throw his ball into the water in disgust.

The new ball worked wonders – travelling 197 yards into the hole for an ace at the 12th. A birdie on the 13th took him top of the leaderboard but two bogeys followed.

Schwartzel’s compatriot Andrew McLardy birdied the second as he moved into a tie for second with Michael Hoey on ten under after three holes, while Drysdale was level par for the day through two.
