Freddy Schott is hoping to cement his spot at the top of the Road to Mallorca Rankings when he tees it up at this week’s Dormy Open.
The German moved to the top of the Rankings after securing his maiden European Challenge Tour victory at last week’s Frederikshavn Challenge – presented by HESSEL, where he triumphed in wire-to-wire fashion.
He arrives at Österåkers Golfklubb hoping to extend his advantage at the summit with just nine events left to play and become the first German to be crowned Challenge Tour Number One.
“It was fantastic,” he said. “I still can’t believe it and it needs time to sink in. I had a few beers to celebrate on Sunday night and it was a very nice evening.
“I signed my scorecard on Sunday and suddenly, I got told I was Number One on the Rankings. It feels surreal but I am now going to fight for that spot until the end of the season.”
The 21-year-old has enjoyed a stellar season on the Challenge Tour with one victory and six further top tens, and after challenging at the top on numerous occasions throughout the year he was delighted to triumph in Denmark.
“It was a huge relief because I just wanted to become a winner on the Challenge Tour,” he said. “I never lost the belief that I could win and the experiences I have gained from coming close on several occasions this season has been invaluable.
“I have now experienced the winning feeling which has given me the confidence that I can win many more tournaments. I have proven to myself that I can get over the line on Sunday.
“I’m looking to carry positive momentum into this week. I love the look of the course and I am here to compete at the top again. The fairways look quite wide, the rough is high and the greens are firm, so I think it’s going to be a tough test and an amazing week.”
Schott will be joined in Sweden by defending champion Félix Mory and Englishman Todd Clements, who makes his first Challenge Tour appearance since his victory at the Irish Challenge last month.
The action gets under way at 7:30am local time on Thursday, with Schott teeing it up alongside countryman Alexander Knappe and Sweden’s Simon Forsström at 1:30pm.
