Brett Rumford fired himself to the top of the leaderboard in the 3 Irish Open at the Killarney Golf and Fishing Club.

The Australian, who has three wins on The European Tour with the most recent being in the Omega European Masters in 2007, birdied the first two holes to move to seven under par.

He is closely followed by Anders Hansen, Seung-yul Noh and Gonzalo Fdez-Castaño, who are just one shot adrift.

Hansen is two under for the day through eight holes, while Noh and Fdez-Castaño are one under after six and three holes respectively.

David Howell, clubhouse leader after the first round, hasn’t fared so well, though, and is now five under par.

The Englishman birdied the seventh, but a bogey on the eighth and a double bogey on the first mean he is two over par for the day, having played nine holes.
