Ernie Els was never far away from the leaders but it was not until the last round that he surged through with five birdies in the first ten holes to establish his position. Strong challenges came from Nick Faldo and Fred Couples but it was Els who held steady to win by one stroke from New Zealander Michael Long, who called a one stroke penalty on himself when his ball moved on the 15th green, and Australian Peter Lonard. "When that happens you just have to own up and be honest with yourself," said Long.
